LOT 108

1997 Land Rover Defender 90 Station Wagon

A used Defender described the way a used Defender should be: the seepage named, the ride height named, and the waxoyl named as an obstacle to inspection.

Announcement sheet

It runs under the amber light

Announced: oil seepage at the rear main and a non-standard suspension.

The items below are the boundary of what can be disputed after the sale — plus anything our standard says should have been announced and was not.

3 announcements

  1. Oil seepage at the rear main seal. Not a drip; a film. Photographed from the pit.
  2. Aftermarket suspension fitted, ride height raised approximately 50 mm.
  3. Chassis has been waxoyled. This makes a visual corrosion assessment harder and we say so rather than grading around it.

Condition report

3 findings on the diagram

■ minor■ moderate■ major

  • Rear crossmemberPrevious repair section welded in. Weld quality is acceptable; the repair is old and stable.
  • Driver door skinDent approximately 60 mm, not through the paint.
  • Bulkhead footwell, passenger sideCorrosion at the seam. Sound to the pick test but it will need attention.

Inspection notes

  • Starts on the button hot and cold.
  • Transfer box selects high and low without complaint.
  • Steering has the play you would expect and no more.
  • Heater matrix works. Door seals do not.

Paperwork and history

Title
Clean title. Imported at 25 years; import paperwork copied into the file.
Records
Partial history. Cambelt and injector work invoiced in the last two years.
Odometer
Reading believed to be the vehicle's actual distance.

The waxoyl line is the one that matters. A treated chassis is a good thing for the vehicle and a bad thing for an inspector, because it hides what it protects.

We could have graded past it. Instead the condition report says the assessment is limited, which is the truthful version.

It runs with a reserve in the next sale.
